Sony didn't come to CES 2013 empty handed, as the company announced an impressive Android running flagship, the Xperia Z, and its equally pleasing variant for select markets, the Xperia ZL. As expected from premium products, both smartphones are equipped with market-leading features, including a powerful quad-core processor and 1080p resolution display.

Underneath, the two recently announced flagships from Sony share a remarkable set of similarities. Most notably, both smartphones feature a 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor with 2 GB of RAM and Adreno 320 graphics, while the connectivity side is covered from virtually every angle thanks to Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, NFC and even 4G LTE network support. On top of that, the two phones also share an identical rear-facing 13 Mpix camera with Exmor RS sensor and 1080p HDR (High Dynamic Range) video recording capabilities.

The star of the show, however, is the 5 inch LED-backlit "Reality Display" with 1920 x 1080 pixel Full HD resolution. Powered by Sony's Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, the screen offers an ultra-sharp image with natural looking colours. Both phones wield a distinctive, rectangular design with great attention to detail that helps Sony's phones easily stand out from the crowd.

Despite the two devices having an identical size displays, the Xperia ZL is shorter, but also slightly heavier and thicker than the Xperia Z. And, while both phones are covered by a durable, tempered glass display, only the Xperia Z is protected against the ingress of dust and is water resistant.

Sony Xperia Z and ZL will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean at the time of their launch in the first quarter of this year. However, according to Sony, an upgrade to Android 4.2 will shortly follow to offer owners the latest Android user experience. As mentioned earlier, the Xperia ZL will be launched ''in selected markets'', but no further details were disclosed by Sony at this stage.
