Review: Tower Raiders 3 for Android
Tower defence games come and go in all sorts of flavours, and so it's getting increasingly difficult for the developers to put an interesting spin on the ageing formula. But there are also some success stories to be found, and Tower Raiders 3 seems to be part of it.

Tower Riders 3

As the third instalment of the popular series, Tower Raiders 3 immediately grabs attention with its highly detailed 3D environments. Immersion was traditionally the weakest aspect of tower defence games, but, with the incredible processing power of most smartphones, there's very little reason for the developers not to invest some time polishing the visual side of their games. The world of Tower Raiders 3 is done completely in 3D, allowing the players to freely rotate the camera or zoom in on the stage for a more personal view of the unfolding action.

The creators have also tweaked the gameplay of their latest game to keep the formula fresh and exciting to even the most grizzled veterans of the series. Yes, you still get to build and upgrade a variety of stationary guns - from basic miniguns to lasers and cannons. And, of course, you're still up against a wave after wave of enemies that stubbornly make their way through the stage.

But placing the guns around choke points isn't your only worry here, as you're also in charge of protecting 'recruits'. These are humans placed under your command that are mainly used to gather resources, which in turn can be used to build and strengthen your defences. Curiously enough, instead of eating your resource gathers, the 'invaders' will merely attempt to haul them to one of the exits on the map, giving your turrets one last chance to break even.

This, of course, can and will seriously disrupt your flow of resources when several workers have been pulled off the supply line by the attackers. As you progress through the game, the characters gain valuable experience that increases different attributes like how much resources can they gather, or how effectively can they 'resist' against being abducted. If the enemies prove to be too tough to handle, you can either call down a 'Strike Team' to mop up the area or purchase permanent upgrades to your arsenal via the in-game store.

Although the game is still under active development, we've played through a couple of stages on our Motorola RAZR i without encountering any game breaking bugs. As it stands now, Tower Raiders 3 already looks like an incredibly polished and addictive game. Best of all, Tower Raiders 3 is currently free, so there's no reason to let that one pass if you're looking for a quality gaming experience on your Android handset or tablet.
