Microsoft confirms that it hasn't forgotten about the users on older hardware, and that a substantial update to all the existing Windows Phone 7.5 devices is coming in early 2013.

Some of the most anticipated features are coming to Windows Phone 7.5 devices, according to Microsoft. While it won't drastically change things under the hood, the 7.8 update will give older phones like Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 a fresh new look that will more closely resemble that of Windows Phone 8.

The new features that the update brings include resizable Live tiles, additional theme colours and some security enhancements for Microsoft Exchange. Aside from the already mentioned OS tweaks, the highly popular Angry Birds Space as well as the more recent Angry Birds Star Wars will be also making their way to all the eager gamers on Windows Phone.

''We know you’re eager to get the Windows Phone 7.8 update, and we want you to know that we’re working closely with our hardware and carrier partners to get it tested, approved, and rolled out to as many devices as possible in early 2013. As we work to quickly get this in the hands of our loyal users, we’re also striving to deliver a high-quality release and ensure a smooth transition for our widely expanded services'', said Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Phone.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's global offensive on the mobile market continues in full force with Windows Phone 8 and some truly eye-catching handsets. Underneath, the second generation of company's mobile OS supports multi-core processors, high resolution displays and removable storage, that, coupled with a slew of exclusive built-in services such as Office or Xbox Live, should bring Windows Phone 8 on an equal playing field with its competition.
