As the 26th of October launch event of Windows 8 draws closer, Microsoft has released another interesting bit of information. The company announced that it will be also launching SmartGlass, a free app that will act as a natural extension for XBox 360, Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 devices.

SmartGlass can serve as a remote for when you're watching films on XBox 360, or streaming other type of content from the internet, as well as working with the recently launched Xbox Music service. To enjoy all of the features, however, users will be required to obtain Xbox Live Gold membership. Social media interaction has been promised as well.

Microsoft has also shared that the upcoming Forza Horizon and Dance Central 3 will be among the first games that will be supported by SmartGlass. Microsoft has stated that the app will also be available to other external devices running on iOS and Android platforms, but didn't give any specific launch window.
