Doro 8030 – Smartphones Made Easy

Doro 8030 – Smartphones Made Easy
One thing we all share is our unconditional love for smartphones. What’s peculiar about smartphones is that they are universally accepted by all generations which cannot be said for a lot of gadgets on the market. Naturally, the age group that has the most difficult time catching up with technology are the seniors. Technology moves at such a blistering rate that sometimes even we find it difficult to adjust to new products. In order to make technology just a little bit more accessible to the seniors, Doro created a new smartphone with heavy focus on usability.

One thing is for certain, Doro 8030 isn’t your typical smartphone centred on good looks and performance. Each element of this device was carefully designed to be easily accessible and comfortable to use. The first sign of this is the chunky body covered in non-slip coating ensuring that a person with impeded motor skills has an easier time using it. Nearly all other smartphones on the market feature a sleek chassis and thinner profile making them very slippery even for people with normal motor skills. You can put a thick case on any phone, but Doro 8030 was designed to be resilient from the ground up. We haven’t tested its rigidity by dropping it, but it certainly looks and feels like a robust smartphone.

Moving on to the front, Doro 8030 comes with a 4.5-inch display producing a resolution of 854x480 pixels. The amount of pixels doesn’t really matter here, what matters is how bright and legible the screen is to a senior person. Our testing showed that the screen handled sunny days extremely well thanks to exceptional brightness and low reflectivity. Worth mentioning is the fact that it comes with a brightness sensor preserving your battery life once you move to an area with less light. Directly below the screen are three rather large navigation buttons allowing you to quickly access homescreen, go back, and switch between apps. The interesting bit is that these keys are physical instead of touch sensitive so you actually have a tactile feedback on whether you pressed them or not. That’s something we don’t see very often these days, but it makes a world of difference. Two additional elements we tested here were microphone and the speaker because that’s quite an important aspect for a senior person with impaired hearing or quieter voice. As expected, Doro 8030 passed with flying colours thanks to its high-gain microphone and speaker compatible with hearing aids.

In terms of software, Doro 8030 runs a modified version of Android 5.1 focused on accessibility like everything else. For starters, all the icons are much bigger than on a regular user interface making them very easy to see. Not only that, all other aspects of the software are broken down into simple steps that are incredibly easy to understand. Hardware-wise there’s not much to mention here except memory expandability using microSD. Since this phone comes with a VGA front camera and 5-megapixel main camera, expanding the memory might be useful if the user plans to take plenty of photos. Camera performance is where you would expected it to be for 5-megapixels.

Before we forget, there are two additional features worth pointing out. The first is Doro’s assistance button we mentioned in earlier reviews of their phones. It allows users to set up a predetermined message or even call predetermined numbers in case of emergency. The other feature is an excellent dock allowing users to charge the phone with absolute ease at night. Plugging in the cable isn’t that hard, but we could have never imagined how convenient using a dock is until we started using this one.

Doro 8030 obviously isn’t your typical smartphone, but a device specialized to deliver maximum usability to those who need it. And it certainly does that! After spending some time with it we were truly amazed by the attention to detail and the effort invested by Doro’s designers to make this phone the most user-friendly device on the market. If you are in the market for a smartphone with great accessibility features, Doro 8030 is definitely the way to go.
