Doro Liberto 820 - Small Size - Big Heart
Doro isn't your typical smartphone company. Instead of following everyone else, they decided to focus on a niche market within the smartphone industry consisting of elderly people and those in need of better accessibility features. Such phones might sound trivial, but to those who really need them they represent a window into the world of technology that would otherwise be inaccessible. On review today is Doro Liberto 820 sporting the company’s well-known assistance button and numerous other accessibility features. Let’s dive in and see what awaits!

Design isn’t the main focus of Doro devices, however they always do a great job of aligning practicality and function. For obvious reasons materials such as metal and glass are omitted from their phones, but the polycarbonate they use provides ample grip and sturdiness. You wouldn’t want a phone that is susceptible to cracks if you have limited mobility or limited strength. Dimensions come in at 126 x 66 x 11mm making it a modestly sized phone compared to modern flagships. This doesn’t make it any less usable as we feel that Doro struck a perfect balance between portability and screen size. Thanks to its dimensions, 820 Mini is extremely comfortable to hold and doesn’t present a challenge to those with limited grip. Also worth mentioning are the physical navigation keys below the screen that are much better than touch sensitive or on-screen buttons for this use case as they provide ample tactile feedback.

Featuring a 4.5-inch screen producing a 940 x 560 resolution, Doro certainly isn’t aiming at the top of the market however there are plenty of redeeming qualities to keep users happy. One of them is exceptional brightness which allows users to enjoy their smartphones outdoors without squinting all the time. Colour reproduction is surprising as well, providing a very consistent experience across the board. One thing we absolutely love with Doro phones is the included smartphone dock. Plugging in a charger isn’t really a huge deal for most people yet once you start using the dock there is simply no turning back.

The company’s biggest effort in making this phone easier to use can be seen on their custom version of Android. In years of reviewing smartphones we have seen a lot of unique Android flavours, but none had such devotion towards simplicity and accessibility. Every single step and action on this phone is broken up into easily digestible tasks, designed to slowly guide users to their ultimate goal. Pop-up messages will appear explaining what you need to do in order to send a message for example or adjust a certain setting. To someone who is tech savvy it might sound infuriating, but for those who haven’t caught up with technology, it’s a much needed helping hand to bridge the gap.

Doro’s assistance button is a key feature on all their devices including Liberto 820. It can be programmed to sound a siren and send a text or call up to five numbers in case of emergency. This feature sets Doro apart from other smartphone makers as it provides a way to easily contact someone in case of emergency. Storage-wise, 820 comes with 4GB of internal memory which are depleted pretty fast so be sure to grab an expansion card up to 32GB when buying it. The 8-megapixel camera accompanied by LED flash takes fairly basic photos, yet we weren’t disappointed with the results as they were perfect for occasional snaps of our favourite moments.

Is Doro Liberto 820 the right device for you? For users needing assistance and help with Android, there simply isn’t a more user-friendly device on the market. Additionally, the emergency button provides users with a quick contact option in case anything goes wrong. In summary then, Doro Liberto 820 is the perfect smartphone for those who like to stay on the safe side.
